Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are teeth replacements that the Jerrold F. Heller & Associates D.D.S. periodontist, Babak Ghalili, DMD, permanently installs in your jaw. Dental implants are typically made of titanium, a biocompatible metal that fuses with your natural jaw bone to work in the same way that the tooth roots used to.

The replacement tooth is also titanium, and a custom dental crown covers it. Dental implants look extremely natural because they’re made in the exact dimensions of the tooth they’re replacing. Your dental implants can last as long as natural teeth, so you can expect to have them for the rest of your life with proper care.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Your Jerrold F. Heller & Associates D.D.S. dentist does a comprehensive oral exam and takes a series of X-ray images to determine whether dental implants could work for you. You must have a strong and healthy bone to support the implants, and you also need sufficient gum tissue.

If you’ve experienced bone and gum loss, it may still be possible to get dental implants. In this case, Dr. Ghalili may recommend a bone restoration or augmentation procedure like a sinus lift or bone graft. You may also need a gum tissue graft in some cases.

How does the dental implant process work?

First, you’ll have oral surgery to prepare your mouth for implants. This includes any necessary extractions and may include other procedures like bone restoration if you need it. You may need several months to heal before the next step.

Next, Dr. Ghalili creates incisions in your gums and then inserts the implant directly in your jaw. Following this step, you’ll wait at least several months so your implant can integrate with the bone for long-term stability. This is called osseointegration.

Finally, Dr. Ghalili attaches your custom-made prosthetic tooth and crown. Once your implant is fully in place, you’ll have the same level of functionality as you would with a natural, healthy tooth. Plus, your dental implant blends seamlessly with your other teeth, creating a beautiful, fully restored smile.
